Overview

Today, most smart security cameras use Wi-Fi, but there are ways around it. Security cameras have been vital to surveillance for private and enterprise setups. These cameras often come with Wi-Fi and a built-in internet connectivity that lets you check real-time footage even if you are away.

Can wireless cameras work without Wi-Fi?

Well, many security cameras do not need a functional Wi-Fi connection to work. Commonly, security cameras use Wi-Fi to transmit footage to the cloud so that you can view it on an app. In such case, you need to install a hard drive or micro SD card inside the camera also known as edge based storage. The footage will be recorded inside the storage options, and you can recover the recording later.

Here are some camera types that work without Wi-Fi and get you the live feed

  1. CCTV: – CCTV security cameras are closed-circuit television cameras that are hardly ever used for home security. Instead, they are preferred by businesses and the police, but are still somewhat dated. The footage in these cameras is usually stored on a digital video recorder (DVR) and viewed on multiple monitors. The data is sent through wires, usually concealed in walls, ceilings, and floors.
  1. Analog: – Analog camera refers to any camera that transmits video to a DVR. Like CCTV, analog cameras utilize wires to transmit data. An analog camera doesn’t have any of the features associated with IP cameras, like push notifications, thus not requiring any kind of internet connection to function.
  1. IP: – IP cameras are a digital video camera that sends and receives data via an IP network. Unlike traditional CCTV cameras, they don’t need any kind of local storage device. Nowadays, most IP cameras work only through Wi-Fi, but some will possess multiple ways of connecting to the internet. They can also function via Ethernet cables. An Ethernet connection wouldn’t necessarily need a Wi-Fi hub to work, as it can connect straight to a broadband line or can latch directly into Wi-Fi network in vicinity.
  1. Mobile (SIM based camera): – These category cameras come with built-in SIM slot which make internet connectivity seamless. You can buy a mobile data plan from any of standard mobile network providers, which can then be used to connect your camera to the internet. A mobile data plan has the added benefit of letting you move the camera around with you, which is especially helpful if you often travel or need it positioned far from a Wi-Fi hub.

What is the need for a security camera without Wi-Fi?

Security is something that should never be compromised, and the internet is clearly something that everyone does not have access to in equal measure. One of the significant advantages of cameras that don’t function through the internet is that they are quite less likely to be hacked than their Wi-Fi enabled counterparts. Cameras that interface with a traditional DVR via cables are nearly impossible to hack, whereas Wi-Fi connected devices always bear the risk of being intercepted by a hacker. Some traditional cameras are able to transmit completely uncompressed footage to a DVR, presuming you have the storage capacity for it. While, the footage clarity in Wi-Fi cameras is feature rich.
