What is PoE Switch v/s Normal Switch?

  • PoE Switch

A PoE switch is a device used in computer networking. It is used to connect Ethernet cables to devices that require power, such as routers, switches, and access points. A POE switch can also be used to connect two or more devices without the need for an external power source.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology that allows devices such as computers, VoIP phones, and IP cameras to be powered by the Ethernet cable. This means that you only need one power source for your PoE devices, making installation and maintenance much more accessible.

  • Non PoE Switch

On the other hand, a regular switch does not provide power to devices and only serves to connect them. If you want to purchase a switch for your home or office network, you must decide which type of switch is best for your needs.

As the name suggests, a non-PoE switch does not support Power over Ethernet. This means that it cannot provide power to devices connected to it, such as IP cameras or VoIP phones. On the other hand, a PoE switch can supply power to these devices through Ethernet cables.

Difference Between PoE & No PoE Switch

The main difference between PoE and non-PoE switches is that a PoE switch uses Power over Ethernet technology to deliver data and power to devices, whereas a non-POE switch only delivers data.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows network cables to carry electrical current, thus providing power to devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points. A PoE switch can deliver up to 25 watts per port, while a non-PoE switch cannot provide any power.

In terms of data transmission, both PoE and non-PoE switches function the same way. They both forward packets of data based on destination MAC and IP addresses. The only difference is that PoE switches can provide power to devices, while non-PoE switches do not.

Benefits of PoE Switches

The ability to connect devices and share data is essential in today’s business world. A POE switch can offer many benefits over a traditional network switch, including:

  1. Cost Savings: A PoE switch can eliminate the need for costly AC adapters or outlets near each device on your network.
  2. Increased Efficiency: PoE switches deliver power and data over a single cable, which can result in a more efficient network.
  3. Flexibility: A PoE switch can be used with various devices, including IP phones, wireless access points, and security cameras.
  4. Scalability: As your business grows, you can easily add new devices to your network by adding additional PoE switches.

Conclusion

A PoE switch is a great option to power devices over Ethernet. A standard switch will not provide this feature. If you have devices that need to be powered via Ethernet, then a PoE switch is the way to go.
