The Field View of PRAMA High-Performance ANPR Bullet Camera

High-Performance ANPR Bullet Camera have the ability to see way far, depending on the specific camera and settings you have. However, not every camera will be able to see this far while still providing clear, high-quality, usable video.

Some cameras may only be able to see clear detail up to 30 feet, while others can see much farther. Business owners need their surveillance cameras to record usable video and details, especially when monitoring footage and investigating incidents.

Here’s how you can determine how far commercial surveillance cameras can see clearly so you can consider the right technology for your particular business.

Understanding Field of View, Resolution, and Focal Length

Surveillance cameras have what’s called a field of view (FOV). Cameras that have a wide field of view—meaning they are able to cover more square footage—aren’t always able to see better detail. In fact, detail can be worse, as objects may appear farther away than they really are.

Cameras with a wide FOV tend to have a shorter focal length. In cameras with a narrower field of view, the focal length is longer, meaning objects may appear closer to the camera and in better detail. In some surveillance cameras, you can adjust the focal length, which will change the field of view.

The resolution of your commercial surveillance cameras will also affect how far they can see. Generally, the higher the resolution, the more detail the camera can see, even from far away. Higher resolution cameras can help businesses enjoy a wider field of view while still seeing objects that are far away in detail. Measurements for resolution are often given in megapixels (MP), with 8MP, or 4K, being one of the highest resolutions.

When choosing a commercial surveillance camera based on how far it can see, you’ll need to consider the camera’s field of view, focal length, resolution, and adjustable settings.

Choosing the Right Surveillance Cameras for Your Needs

You aren’t limited on options when searching for commercial surveillance cameras. For instance, you can ensure clarity of detail by using several cameras to cover a single area, especially if that area is of vital importance for your surveillance.

If you want a wide field of view without compromising on detail, you may be able to take advantage of a PTZ camera, which allows you to have a 360-degree view of an area with the ability to zoom in on specific objects or areas for a higher resolution. You can even program the camera to automatically zoom in on predetermined events, such as a trespasser or vehicle that comes into the frame, which allows you to track objects of interest in real-time.

When you need detailed footage in compromised lighting or weather conditions, some cameras have infrared technology so they can record footage even at nighttime without an outside light source. However, if your surveillance cameras don’t have this technology, you’ll need to consider additional on-site lighting to ensure your cameras can see detail from far away when recording at night.
